Proposal at Boldt Castle

Photography opens up access to places where we’d never get to go otherwise. On Friday, August 2, 2013, we got a front-row seat to an engagement, as it was happening!
Daniel Andrzejczak of Girard, Pennsylvania (near Erie), met his girlfriend Desirae Fawn Doty at a football game, and they had been dating for two years. Daniel knew the time had come for him to pop the question. He contacted us, and Heath Associate Aaron Hall showed up with camera equipment to capture the whole event on film.
Daniel and Aaron had pre-arranged to meet at Boldt Castle’s Italian gardens on Heart Island. But Aaron got there first, and set his video camera up on a tripod by a nearby bench, where he sat, pretending to be a laid-back tourist. He even brought his own son, Hunter, to act as a decoy.
“I was in stealth mode,” Aaron told us afterward. Daniel and his girlfriend soon showed up, and at precisely 11:11 a.m., Daniel got down on one knee, to Desirae’s obvious surprise.
The keepsake video Aaron recorded for the couple includes the proposal, delivered in the form of a poem Daniel wrote for the occasion. Desirae was visibly moved by the proposal, and she said yes! Aaron’s film captures Daniel’s sliding the ring on his new fiancee’s finger.
Until Daniel pointed Aaron out to her, Desirae, distracted by the couple’s big moment, had no idea an associate from our studio was sitting nearby, filming the whole proposal. Daniel feels like his surprise proposal worked out beautifully.
To Daniel, 11:11 signifies good luck, and wishes coming true. “True love,” he shared with Aaron as he was setting up the shoot, “is feeling special even on an ordinary day, and knowing there’s nothing ordinary about it.” He says he chose Boldt Castle as the place to ask Desirae to marry him because he sees it as a “beautiful setting built by love.”
After the couple were officially engaged, Aaron (and Hunter) stayed to take engagement photos on the castle grounds. The weather was beautiful, and the couple will be able to remember every detail for the rest of their lives, due to the magic of photography.
